Throughout history there has been much anti-Semitism
directed towards the Jews. We, as Christians apologize and ask forgiveness.
In the new historic light of 'Nostra Aetate', we need to ponder
deeply our relationship between Jews and Christians.
1965 Vatican Council II
" What happened in Jesus' passion
cannot be blamed upon all the Jews then living, without
distinction, nor upon all Jews of today. As the Church has
always held and countinues to hold, Christ in his boundless
love freely underwent His passion and death because of the
sins of all, so that all might attain salvation. It is,
therefore, the duty of the Church's preaching to proclaim
the Cross of Christ as the sign of God's all-embracing love
and as the fountain from which every grace flows."(Nostra
Aetate 4B-b6,9)
1974 Vatican Documents
It is the same God, inspirer and author
of the books of both Testaments (Dei Verbum, 16) who speaks
both in the old and new Covenants.
The Old Testament and the Jewish tradition
founded upon it must not set against the New Testament in
such a way that the former seems to constitute a religion
of only justice, fear and legalism, with no appeal to the
love of God and neighbor.(cf. Deut.6,5; Lev.19,18; Matt.22,24)
